Valencia’s Spanish midfielder Sergio Canales will miss the remainder of the UEFA European Under-21 Championships with a hamstring injury.
Canales suffered the problem after making a substitute appearance in Spain’s 1-0 win over Russia on Thursday and is now set to fly home for further treatment.
It is the latest in a string of injuries for the former Real Madrid midfielder, who made just 15 appearances for Valencia last season in all competitions.
He returned to first-team action for the club midway through the season after recovering from a knee ligament injury, but then went on to suffer various minor muscle injuries.
Spain’s Under-21 coach Julen Lopetegui, who admitted he was “worried” about Canales’ fitness after the Russia game, will not be allowed to call up a replacement.
